Morehead-Cain Scholarship-UNC-CH

The Morehead-Cain Foundation has invited NCSSM to nominate ten seniors in the class of 2020 for the Morehead-Cain Scholars Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Morehead-Cain award is a four-year merit scholarship that provides full tuition, student fees, housing, meals, books, supplies, and a laptop computer. It also includes a four-year Summer Enrichment Program in outdoor leadership, public service, inquiry and exploration, and private enterprise, as well as Discovery Funds to pursue further educational opportunities.

The Morehead-Cain Foundation seeks top high school students who are leaders in their school and community, rank near the top of their class academically, and exert positive and meaningful influence in non-academic areas. To be eligible for the scholarship, a candidate must show significant evidence of outstanding achievement in each of the four selection criteria:

  • Scholarship: You influence, energize, and inspire others to work together to make an impact. It’s more than titles held or roles played. For you, leadership is about courage and action. You initiate. You get things done.
  • Leadership: You live for opportunities to learn. You thrive in an academically rigorous environment, yet are able to contribute to your community in other ways. You’re ready to take full advantage of UNC’s academic excellence.
  • Character: Courage, humility, integrity, maturity, perseverance, self‑awareness, generosity, and empathy—these are the core values of the Morehead‑Cain community. You embrace the fact that you are growing and learning, and you are energized by the journey ahead.
  • Physical Vigor: You have demonstrated a sustained commitment to fitness and wellness. You value what is gained—collaboration, sportsmanship, discipline, stamina, and persistence—by preparing for and engaging in competitions and performances. [This means that you must show a demonstrated commitment to physical activity--team sports (at NCSSM or league teams) and/or individual sports (climbing, rafting, cycling, hiking).] Due consideration is given to nominees with physical disabilities

Before you begin your online NCSSM nomination application, please refer to the Morehead-Cain Scholars website for more information about the program.

To be considered for nomination by the NCSSM Scholarship Nominating Committee, interested seniors must submit an online nomination application no later than 12:00 noon Wednesday, September 4, upon your return from the Labor Day Extended Weekend. Please be sure to read the application carefully and follow all instructions. Late applications will not be considered. We encourage you to copy the questions into a Google or Word Document while you write and revise your responses.

Morehead-Cain also invites direct application by those North Carolina students not selected for nomination by their school committee. Since our school could reasonably nominate fifty or more seniors for the Morehead-Cain award each year, please consider that possibility as well--but only after the NCSSM Scholarship Nominating Committee has announced its decision in mid-September.

Please note, the online nomination application is only for the NCSSM Scholarship Committee's use. The formal Morehead-Cain application is an entirely different process from our Google Form (although you will notice some definite similarities--we modeled the school's form on the official Morehead-Cain application). You will need to make an online account once you decide to formally apply for the actual Morehead-Cain Scholars Program. Because you must indicate whether you are an official school nominee or that you are self-nominating, you must wait until the Scholarship Committee meets and selects our school's ten nominees before you submit the online application through Morehead-Cain.

IMPORTANT: All students who are applying for the Morehead-Cain Scholarship - either for NCSSM nomination or directly - should enter Jennifer Betz ( as the Counselor. Academic Programs, not the Counseling Office, will complete the required School Report and will provide your transcript. Please do not request a transcript from Naviance.
