When I add a college to which I'm applying, why does a ? show up in the screen beside the college name?

This means you have not indicated if you are using the Common Application to apply to that particular college or university. Click on the link to the left of the screen that is under the heading Applying Via the Common App? A drop down box will appear so that you can indicate whether you are or not.

What if the wrong deadline date is generated for a college?

Click on the pencil icon under the heading Edit. A drop down box will appear with different deadline options. Try every option until the appropriate deadline date generates. If no date generates after you've tried every option, email your counselor.

What if a date does not generate for one or more of my colleges?

It is very important that you make sure the correct deadline date generates for each college. Check to make sure you have correctly entered Early Action, Early Decision, Regular Decision, Priority, etc. (Rolling applications will not generate a deadline.) If a deadline is not generated, email your counselor immediately. Otherwise, your transcript may not be sent on time.

Do I invite NCSSM teachers to be recommenders through the Common Application?

No, do NOT invite NCSSM teachers as your recommenders in the Common Application. You must request your teacher recommendations through Naviance.

How do I submit a teacher recommendation from a teacher at my previous high school?

Teachers from your previous high school are not in our Naviance system. You may invite them as a recommender through the Common Application if the college uses the CA. Or, they can opt to send hard copies of their letters to the colleges.  In that case, it is appropriate for you to provide those teachers with stamped addressed envelopes to the admissions offices of the colleges. Also, please ask the teachers to put your full name, date of birth, Common Application ID, and current high school (NCSSM) on their letters.

Do I submit a request for a counselor letter of recommendation through Naviance?

No, you do not need to request a counselor letter of recommendation or bring us any forms. When you request a transcript, our office automatically sends: transcript, counselor summary letter, secondary school report, senior course listings, and the NCSSM Profile.

What is the FERPA waiver? Do I need to waive my right to see my recommendations?

  • Waiving your right lets colleges know that you do not intend to read your recommendations, which helps reassure colleges that the letters are candid and truthful.
  • Some recommenders may refuse to write a letter for you unless you waive your rights. Check with your counselor or teachers to see if any of them follow such a policy.

What if it says "no request" under the heading Transcript?

This means you have added the college, but you have not requested the transcript. To request it, look above the box and you will see a link that is titled request transcripts. Click on that link and then you will be able to select the colleges to which you want to send transcripts. Remember to scroll down and update your request.

How do I know if my transcript has been sent?

Click on the colleges tab. Click on colleges I’m applying to. Scroll down to your colleges, and look under the transcript column. If it has not been sent yet, it will say requested. Once it has been sent, it will say sent.
